Madison Council discusses increasing truck fines
In an interview after the meeting, Madison Mayor John Hamm said truck drivers whose trucks weigh over five tons, the city’s limit, on city roads have been a problem as of late. The fine could go from $100 to $200. Overweight trucks have a direct impact on the city’s finances. Hamm said the presence of trucks which fail to meet weight standards on city roads results in more wear and tear on the roads. In a time when the price of asphalt is rising due to high oil prices, unnecessary wear and tear makes road repairs more costly.Hamm also said the tractor-trailers have also created curb damage in the past. He said the Police Department has done a satisfactory job of issuing tickets to violators in the past. Hamm hopes a possible increase in the fine will help deter drivers with trucks over the weight limit from driving on city roads. In addition, the council also approved a request from Florence Kierski for the purchase of a vacant lot on 806 Washington Ave. It also approved the request from True Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church for a special use permit at 1639 Third St. for a day care facility. The council approved Mid-America Pipe Services application for payment in the amount of $50,638.01 for a sewer cleaning project. |
