The Granite City school board approved the purchase of scoreboards for the football and soccer fields at Tuesday night's meeting. According to documentation provided at the meeting, the Granite City Soccer Alumni pledged $6,000 toward the purchase of a new soccer scoreboard. Each board will have four permanent advertising signs which can be sold for $5,000 each. In addition, both boards will feature programmable message boards on which advertising space can be leased.

Granite City Superintendent of Schools Harry Briggs said the district will put no money into the signs. All the money will be fronted by sponsorships, alumni and the district's contract with Pepsi-Cola. Briggs said there are a total of eight advertising spots and that the district should have no problem selling the spots because businesses and groups have expressed an interest in sponsorships.

The board also approved elementary handbooks for the 2008-2009 school year. In addition, the board approved a request to use six guidance counselors to work three days of registration at Granite City High School on July 29-31. According to documentation provided by the district, this helps facilitate schedule changes, new registration and late registration.
