School board approves maintenance projects

The Granite City School Board approved a number of maintenance projects for the summer of 2008 at Tuesday's meeting.

The board approved improvements to Worthen School's primary hall restrooms. The project, which has an estimated coast of $8,000, includes the removal and replacement of plumbing wall, installation of new privacy panels and ceramic tile and new lighting. In addition, the board also approved the replacement of windows in two stairwells in the high school cafeteria. The project has an estimated cost of $5,000.

The board approved the purchase and installation of new door numbers for all elementary and middle school buildings to make identification of rooms easier for emergency response personnel. The project, a part of the district's plan to improve safety, has an estimated cost of $7,000. At the April 8 meeting, a report from the Granite City Police Department, who inspected the district's school buildings in January, became public. The report recommended new door numbers for all elementary and middle school buildings.The board also recommended the construction of a new freezer and storage space for the district warehouse and board office, contingent upon receiving a balance of tax increment financing funds from the city. The project has an estimated cost of $150,000.

The board also approved a request to add two driver education teachers. Granite City High School has a backlog of almost 800 students waiting to enroll in drivers education.
